Background

Coastline Housing is an independent, not-for-profit housing association which owns and manages over 4,500 homes. Since 2005 the company has been building great homes and offering great services, employing over 250 staff committed to improving people’s lives through high-quality and affordable housing. Coastline Housing also offer a variety of maintenance services to private and commercial clients.

The requirement

Coastline Housing has been working with Nexus Open Systems to manage their internal and external voice communications for the past eight years. Given the size of the company’s workforce and the volume of customers it handles, having an intuitive system for communication is essential for efficient day-to-day running.

The company had been using Lync 2013 for its audio and messaging services, however, with the software being phased out by Microsoft due to Skype for Business, Nexus highlighted the importance of making the upgrade in order for Coastline Housing to maintain optimum communications productivity. Since the business was migrating from a legacy software it was important that the upgrade was planned carefully to avoid any technical or security issues. Having worked closely with Nexus, Coastline Housing was confident in their technical advice and ability to smoothly transition its workforce to Skype for Business.

The solution

Nexus’ Technical Solutions Consultant, Barry Bryne, sat down with Coastline Housing to discuss their communication needs and wider business objectives. This enabled the team to determine the best solution for the business currently and to plan the migration process. Nexus made the recommendation to upgrade first to the 2015 version of Skype for Business to ensure a stable transition path. The upgrade was completed remotely and seamlessly with minimal disruption to end-users.

The benefits

The Skype for Business upgrade has enhanced internal communications for Coastline Housing and elevated the level of service which their external customers receive. The simple User Experience and improved phone and instant messaging services, desktop sharing and video collaboration have streamlined operations for the management team and supported faster, more productive collaboration. Skype for Business importantly means Coastline Housing can offer better digital communications to its customers.

Chris Ward, Network Manager at Coastline Housing, said, “We have been working with Nexus Open Systems for the past eight years and their technical expertise and consultancy-led approach remains second-to-none. Their engineers are highly experienced and always take care to assess our business needs and advise accordingly on the right solution for us. The upgrade from Lync 2013 to Skype for Business 2015 is one example of this; the pathway recommendation was made based on our unique communication requirements and to guarantee maximum stability.
Thanks to the innovative communication and collaboration features in Skype for Business our staff can better communicate in real-time and respond efficiently to customers. For instance, we have just set up our first meeting room using the video collaboration tool and we’re excited to utilise this going forward. Nexus is an exceptional team and we would not change IT providers.
